Are you a “Karen”? Or what I call a “Debbie Downer”? Always seeing the negatives in a situation?
Well, there is actually a biological reason why you can’t see the glass as half-full. But, before we go any further, I need you to read this: THIS IS NOT AN EXCUSE. Yep. Read that again. Actually, I will just type it again to make sure you read it again: THIS 👏 IS 👏 NOT 👏 AN 👏 EXCUSE. If you don’t know much about me, you should know I am not a fan of excuses. So, I am not telling you this so you can tell anyone who complains about your negative attitude that it’s not your fault. The point of me telling you this is so you can understand how your brain works and then make intentional choices to rewire it.
Did I lose you? Did you read “rewire” and immediately think: ”this is going to be a lot of work and I’m not here for it. “ Well, stick with me, girl, because my goal is to make this as easy as possible for you.
So, this tendency to focus on the negative is called negativity bias. It is meant to protect us and help us survive. Researchers believe it is an evolutionary process within the brain to help us remember potential dangerous situations. While I can appreciate that our brain wants to keep us safe, in this day and age, giving more attention to the negatives is a real mood buster. Focusing on the negative things in our life can be exhausting. It can impact your ability to live a fulfilled life, have meaningful relationships, build connections, create success and feel joy! I don’t know about you, but that’s not how I want to live.
